The big lie in the Democrat race for the presidential nomination is Bernie Sanders Claim he does not use PAC money or have Super PACs supporting him. Until today March 31, 2016 I believed this to be true. Then I saw an article in USA buried on the Election 2016 page.
March 31, 2016 – USAToday – Hillary Clinton ally hits Bernie Sanders with FEC complaints
I thought okay this is just a partisan skirmish between candidates. What caught my eye was not theat the Sanders Campaign was accepting donations over the $2700 limit but that he was accepting support from Super PACs. When I did a search for the named super PACs I found this.
I was really surprised no papers or 24 hour cable news channels had not covered this. A deeper search lead me to this article. It appears they have brushed the surface but Bernie fanatics do not care.
January 28, 2016 – The New York Times – Bernie Sanders Tops His Rivals in Use of Outside Money
“Bernie Sanders of Vermont rarely passed up a chance to bash the rising tide of money in politics, a system he said on Tuesday was “corrupt and undermining American democracy.” At many of these stops, he was accompanied by members of National Nurses United, a seven-year-old union, fanning out from a bright-red bus in matching red scrubs to corral potential Sanders votes But the union is not just busing nurses into Iowa. The union’s super PAC has spent close to $1 million on ads and other support for Mr. Sanders, the Democratic presidential candidate who has inspired liberal voters with his calls to eradicate such outside groups.”
It appears Bernie first started using PAC money to try and win the Iowa Caucus. Hillary still squeaked out a win.
November 24, 2015 – CNN – Union super PAC helps Sanders and he won’t tell them to stop
“Bernie Sanders declined to disavow a super PAC spending money on his behalf in an interview with CNN on Monday and contradicted a statement his campaign made about the political entities he has long spoken out against.”
How has he gotten this far without being exposed for this hypocrisy?
November 18, 2015 – The Examiner – A super PAC helps Sanders after all
“Nurses United for Patient Protection, a super PAC tied to the National Nurses United union that backs Sanders, has spent over $569,000 supporting the socialist candidate, according to reports.”
December 6th, 2015 – Iowa Starting Line – Sunday Grab Bag: Boring Reporting, Bernie’s Super PAC, Chelgren Toast?
““I am the only major candidate running for president that does not have a Super PAC.”
That’s a common refrain from Bernie Sanders out on the campaign trail. However, it’s not exactly an accurate one anymore. In recent weeks several news outlets have noted how he actually is receiving some Super PAC help, specifically from the National Nurses United union that has endorsed him.”
I am suspicious about a moment before the Colorado Caucus was to start. MSNBC or maybe CNN had a live broadcast all day from a Bernie Sanders campaign office. For most of the day it was cheery but at about an hour before caucus time they resumed feed unexpectedly. A woman in the background suddenly realized she was on TV and looked angry and dashed out of frame. I thought it was weird at the time. I now have to consider she might have been someone from a super PAC that is not supposed to be coordinating with the Bernie campaign.
